Mango Sticky Rice Matcha:

You cannot miss the trailer. Chic Chic Cafe is pink — properly, unapologetically pink — parked in front of Thrift City, beside the red Tacos El Muñeco Estilo Jalisco trailer, with a waving maneki-neko cat in the branding and a little pink table out front carrying a sign that says i love you so matcha.

I went in with a decision to make. The acai options looked beautiful but the specialty matcha was what drew me in: Strawberry Cream, Cookie Butter Cloud, Banana Cream, Lavender — and a Lucky Charm matcha that caught my eye! I love Lucky Charms anything…it’s the kid in me. But the big girl in me kept coming back to the Mango Sticky Rice Matcha.

The adult won the toss-up. This time.

Mango sticky rice is a dessert I love, so I know exactly what it has to taste like — and this drink is that dessert, rebuilt as a matcha. Golden mango at the base, green matcha layered through the middle, coconut cream on top— finished with black sesame seeds and chunks of fresh mango.

Here's what made it for me: it wasn't too sweet. The mango brings its own sweetness, so the matcha doesn't have to be buried under sugar to behave — and it isn't. The earthy grassiness of the leaf still comes through, which is my whole standard for matcha. Added sweetness is fine. Losing the leaf is not.

It was delicious, and unique — the first time I've had one like that anywhere. I've barely scratched Austin's matcha scene, and this trailer made me want to go looking for more of it.

The trailer has a playful streak, too. The fall board was running a Pumpkin Spice Latte, a Toasted Marshmallow Matcha, and a Campfire Cocoa — and there was a whole Twilight-themed special framed on the counter, toasted marshmallow and strawberry matcha options for Halloween. Can’t wait to see what they have for Thanksgiving and Christmas!

Next visit, the kid gets her turn: Lucky Charm matcha. She has waited long enough.
